PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN SPECIALIST DESCRIPTION
This program requires 72 hours of classroom attendance in the scientific study of taking blood samples. Class meets twice a week during either morning or evening hours.

Phlebotomists are specially trained individuals who use a variety of equipment and techniques to collect blood samples from patients, usually in conjunction with diagnostic testing. Healthcare Inservices Inc. offers a certificate program in Phlebotomy. This gives interested individuals the opportunity to prepare for and enter a career field in just a matter of months.

NHAOverall vocational objectives for the Phlebotomy Training Prgoram are designed to meet the level of comprehension that will allow the student to achieve Certification status as a Phlebotomist. Certification is provided through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) testing program.

Phlebotomists must be educated and trained in the collection and handling of blood specimens of the highest quality. This requires not only a high level of technical skill in the performance of collection procedures, but also a broad knowledge of laboratory tests and the specimens they require, a focused attention to details such as proper patient identification and preparation, compassionate interpersonal skills in interactions with patients, and knowledge of correct safety procedures for the protection of patient specimens other than blood, such as urine and bodily fluids.

The role of phlebotomist has evolved in different environments to include many other responsibilities besides specimen collection, and education in basic laboratory testing procedures is also essential. Phlebotomists are employed in a wide variety of settings, including hospital laboratories, clinics, physician offices, private laboratories, blood collection centers, home health agencies, and performing home visits for insurance agencies.

At the completion of the program, the student will possess knowledge and demonstrate skills relating to blood sampling:

  • Complications of blood collection.
  • Specialized phlebotomy techniques: pediatric patient; arterial blood gases; blood cultures; etc.
  • Normal ranges of blood tests.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • Employment skills and getting a job.

STANDARDS FOR THE PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM
